The famous clay dolls of Joynagar Mojilpur, a city in the district of South 24 Parganas of rural Bengal, boasts an unparalleled earthen appeal of its own. These uniquely baked clay dolls are presently manufactured single handedly by Sambhu Das, the grandson of legendary doll-making artist, Manmatha Das, who had originally started this form of art a long time ago. The ancestors of the Das family had migrated to Bengal from Jessore (a district in the south-west region of Bangladesh) several years ago. Shambhu Das currently happens to be the only artist in Bengal who still makes these beautiful dolls by hand and is struggling to keep this traditional and majestic art form from going extinct. Manmatha Das was honoured with the prestigious President’s award in the year 1986 for his magnificent creation namely; Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra. 

The use of a wide array of colours makes these figurines look exclusive and lively. Garjan oil used on these dolls enhances their lustre and makes them more appealing to look at.

This set of dolls comprises of interesting human characters like Bon Bibi, Dakshin Roy, Ahlad- Ahladi, a fisherman and a cat.

দক্ষিণ ২৪ পরগনার জয়নগর-মজিলপুরের বিখ্যাত শিল্পী ছিলেন মন্মথ দাস। তিনিই এই অঞ্চলে এক নিজস্ব ঘরানায় পুতুল তৈরি শুরু করেছিলেন। তাঁর পৌত্র শম্ভুনাথ দাস এখন পোড়ামাটির রঙিন পুতুল বানিয়ে থাকেন। আগে মজিলপুরে টেপা পুতুল পাওয়া যেত, তবে বর্তমানে এখানকার পুতুলগুলো এক-খোল আর দু-খোল ছাঁচে প্রস্তুত করা।

মজিলপুরে নানা বিষয়ের পুতুল পাওয়া যায়, যেমন, আহ্লাদ-আহ্লাদী, কলসি কাঁধে মেয়ে, গ্রামীন নারী, বেনেবউ, পশুপাখি, সাহেব-মেম, বাবু এবং আরো অনেক কিছু। তবে ঝুলনের পুতুল, বনবিবি, নারায়ণ-নারায়ণী, বারা ঠাকুর, দক্ষিণ রায়ের মতো দেবীদের নিয়ে বানানো পুতুলগুলির কদরই আলাদা। মজিলপুরের অন্যান্য শিল্পীরাও দেবদেবীদের নিয়ে পুতুল বানিয়ে থাকেন।
